About Tampa

Tampa is located on the west coast of Florida, approximately 200 miles northwest of Miami, 180 southwest of Jacksonville, and 20 miles northeast of St. Petersburg. Tampa is the third most populous city in Florida. It was first discovered by Spanish Explorers in the 16th Century. ¬†In the early 1800’s the US Army established Fort Brooke to protect the harbor in Tampa Bay and this is when Tampa began to develop. When Henry B. Plant’s railroad extended into the Hillsborough River in 1884 it provide access to many new areas. The military has always had a role in the development of Tampa and it still does toady as it is home to MacDill Air Force Base.

Tampa is also home to many professional sports teams, including the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, the Tampa Bay Rays in MLB, the Tampa Bay Storm in the AFL, and the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies in North American Soccer League. It also has college sports the University of South Florida Bulls and University of Tampa Spartans.

There are many attractions to Tampa including Busch Garden and ¬†Adventure Island, Channelside, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, Florida Aquarium, Gasparilla Parades, Glazer’s Children’s Museum, Lowery Park Zoo, Museum of Science and Industry, Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa Theatre, and Ybor City.
